Tributes flood in after death announced of Dame Tessa Jowell

Leading Tributes to Dame Jowell was former Labour leader and ex-prime minister, Tony Blair.

British Olympic Association Chairman Sir Hugh Robertson pays tribute to Dame Tessa Jowell after she sadly passed away yesterday.

"She was the most wise of counsellors, the most loyal and supportive of colleagues, and the best of friends", he said.

She told peers: "In the end, what gives a life meaning is not only how it is lived, but how it draws to a close".

"Her networking skills, which I used to tease her about as she was always on the phone, were used to enormous effect for good, in promoting global collaboration and sharing research and best practice in the treatment of brain tumours and, with her family, turning personal tragedy into the possibility of hope for those facing a similar challenge in the future".

She recently campaigned for more cancer treatments to be made available through the National Health Service.

The former cabinet minister died at home on Saturday evening after being diagnosed with a brain tumour previous year.

Described by the Jewish Labour Movement as "building an everlasting bond with the Jewish community" during her time as a Parliamentary candidate for Ilford North and then as an MP and Cabinet Minister, she appeared at various Jewish community events, guest speaking at dinners and fundraisers. "I hope that this debate will give hope to other cancer patients, like me, so we can live well together with cancer - not just dying of it".

Councillor Georgia Gould, leader of Camden Council, said her optimism and courage were a "massive inspiration" to many. "Her passionate support for more flexible clinical trials for brain tumour patients, and for global data-sharing to improve understanding of the disease, will have a real and lasting impact in our quest for a cure".

Mrs May wrote: "The dignity and courage with which Dame Tessa Jowell confronted her illness was humbling and it was inspirational".

"She was universally popular and respected among politicians of all parties", he added.

Baroness Jowell, who was one of the Labour Party's best known faces during Tony Blair's era, went on to say how she had taken solace from Irish poet Seamus Heaney.

"The second crucial thing she did when Labour were in power was setting the structure which delivered the Games, got the organising committee correctly set up and later on in the process put the Olympic Park legacy into place. Her determination and sense of humour surrounding them was infectious".

As Culture Secretary, she convinced Blair to push for the Olympic games, which proved a person triumph for her when the bid for the 2012 games was successful.

She said: "Seamus Heaney's last words were do not be afraid".

Harriet Harman, the MP in the neighbouring constituency of Peckham, said: "The personal is political - that old women's movement saying - was what Tessa was all about".

Mr Mills accompanied her, along with their children Jess and Matthew, to Buckingham Palace when she was invested with her damehood in January 2013.

Colleagues from across the political spectrum have paid tribute to their fellow politician. But she was no softie.
