Facebook shut 583 million fake accounts in first 3 months of 2018

Facebook struggles to get machines to stamp out hate speech

The world's largest social network published enforcement numbers for the first time on Wednesday, revealing millions of standards violations in the six months to March.

But that's not to say the relatively low number is due to an defect from Facebook.

Facebook removed almost 30 million posts it deemed as graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda and hate speech.

"Whether it's spam, porn or fake accounts, we're up against sophisticated adversaries who continually change tactics to circumvent our controls", Mr Rosen said.

During that period, Facebook removed 583 million fake accounts and 836 million spam posts, images, videos and comments.

Facebook took action against 2.5 million pieces of content in the first quarter, up 56 per cent over the previous quarter.

Spam continues to be a problem at Facebook and a whopping 837 million pieces were removed from its service during the first quarter. Furthermore, 2.5 million pieces of hate speech were removed although Rosen concedes that Facebook's technology still has some work to do in this category as only 38 percent was flagged automatically.

Meanwhile, Facebook said on Monday it has suspended around 200 apps as part of its investigation into whether companies misused personal user data gathered from the social network. The company has come under fire for failing to remove content that has incited ethnic violence in Myanmar, leading Facebook to hire more Burmese speakers. Overall, Facebook estimates that out of every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on Facebook, nine to 10 views were of content that violated its adult nudity and pornography standards.

If a Facebook user makes a post speaking about their experience being called a slur in public, using the word in order to make a greater impact, does their post constitute hate speech? Providing users with a look into just how much work goes into keeping the social media platform free from those looking to abuse their freedom of speech. Facebook noted that while its artificial intelligence technology found and flagged many standard violations, more progress needed to be done.

Some 99.5 percent of the terrorism-related content was flagged by artificial intelligence technology.

Facebook, which like Google is now working on A.I. technology to identify "hate speech", admitted that its current hate-speech-detection technology "still doesn't work that well" and that automatically flagged content "needs to be checked by our review teams". Facebook is expected to host summits in India, Singapore, and the U.S. "While not always flawless, this combination helps us find and flag potentially violating content at scale before many people see or report it".

"My top priorities this year are keeping people safe and developing new ways for our community to participate in governance and holding us accountable", said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on his profile Tuesday.
