Syria air strikes: 'Where is the legal basis?' asks Corbyn

Councilor Richard Farnell

"There is no proposal on the table at the moment for further attacks because so far thank heavens the Assad regime have not been so foolish as to launch another chemical weapons attack", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

"There is precedent over previous interventions where Parliament has had a vote and what I think what we need in this country is something more robust, like a War Powers Act, so that governments do get held to account by Parliament for what they do in our name".

In his interview with Sky News, Corbyn pointed to the 2013 investigation into the chemical weapons attack in Ghouta and the agreement reached between the then U.S. secretary of state, John Kerry, and the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, to allow the destruction of large quantities of chemical weapons in Syria.

Mrs May has said "all the indications" are that the Syrian regime of president Bashar al-Assad, which denies mounting a chemical attack, was responsible for the alleged attack in the formerly rebel-held town of Douma.

Jeremy Corbyn has claimed Theresa May's decision to launch air strikes in Syria is "policy made up by Twitter".

Mr Corbyn said that if Britain wants to "get the moral high ground around the world" it must abide by global law for taking military action.

She told ITV's Peston On Sunday: 'We think that it should be in law that there should be a vote in Parliament before we take military action.

Russian Federation has repeatedly used its security council veto to block resolutions on Syria, including one on Tuesday that would have established an independent investigation into the suspected use of chemical weapons.

"I have urged the Prime Minister to do all she can to avoid civilian casualties given the complicated picture on the ground in Syria, and she has given me assurances in that regard".

Some 75 people, including children, are said to have died when the Syrian regime used chlorine gas and another nerve agent in Douma last Saturday.

Corbyn, the British opposition leader who unexpectedly became party head in 2015, is a supporter of Palestinian rights and a critic of Israel.

But British involvement in further military intervention is controversial at home, in a country still haunted by its role in the US-led invasion of Iraq.

His comments come after the United States, United Kingdom and France fired early Saturday over 100 missiles into Syria according to the Syrian government, Russian Federation and the US military.

It said they all agreed with her on "the importance of restoring the global norm that the use of chemical weapons is never acceptable".

Speaking in Number 10, Mrs May insisted the action was "legal" and defended the decision to go ahead without securing the backing of Parliament.

"The government appears to be waiting for instructions from President Donald Trump on how to proceed", Mr Corbyn said in a statement.

He said it was "deeply alarming" to see the return of chemical weapons to the battlefield in Syria and the airstrikes was the "right thing to do" in "settling the determination to ensure these weapons cannot be used".

Mr Corbyn said: "No-one would ever say never".
