Golovkin Mocks Alvarez Tainted Meat Claim

Gennady Golovkin to fight Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May in Los Angeles

The Nevada State Athletic Commission filed a formal complaint against Alvarez in late March after he twice tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin could be stripped of his IBF Middleweight title should he go through with a fight with Vanes Martirosyan.

Should Triple G beat Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs), the rematch with Alvarez likely will take place later in the year.

"Although most professional sports, worldwide anti-doping agencies and United States boxing commissions treat meat contamination differently from other positive tests, Nevada does not".

But the Mexican star pulled out of the highly anticipated bout after failing two drug tests in February, forcing Golovkin's team to scramble to find a replacement opponent. Alvarez held a news conference earlier this month and explained how tainted meat is the reason he can't fight Golovkin next month.

The fight would have been a rematch of their bout last September, where Alvarez got a controversial draw in a fight many thought Golovkin had clearly won.

"Gennady is a proud champion of the IBF and, as a unified world champion, he looks forward to remaining champion for a long time and defending his middleweight titles many more times", Loeffler said.

"I hope he's learned a lesson, that he is responsible with what he puts in his body", commission Chairman Anthony Marnell said.

"Vanes Martirosyan is now the most important fight of my career".

The NAC ruled that Alvarez did not intentionally inject Clenbuterol.

The Mexican tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol - which he blamed on contaminated meat while training in his native Guadajalara - and is due to appear before the NSAC on Wednesday in Las Vegas.
