Apple's Tim Cook 'wouldn't be in same situation' as Zuckerberg's Facebook scandal

Apple CEO Tim Cook broke from Silicon Valley protocol when he criticized Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook (FB) in unusually blunt terms over its privacy flap.

"Nobody does that", interjected Swisher, causing the audience and Cook to crack up.

"What would I do?"

"Nobody does that", joked Swisher, to which Cook responded: "I'm not making fun of it!"

Cook's comments, reported by Recode, were part of a taped interview for MSNBC's Revolution, which will air Friday, April 6. Mark Zuckerberg and his company are facing boycotts and investigations over the ongoing fiasco.

He said that Apple (aapl) "could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer", referring to the practice of showing personalized ads to users based on information like their online behavior. "We've elected not to do that", he continued. "It's a civil liberty, and in something that is unique to America, this is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press and privacy is right up there for us". There are some high profile names among the enraged and outspoken, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, who suggested that Facebook should be regulated at this point.

Cook said in no uncertain terms that Facebook could not adequately monitor itself in terms of privacy: "I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation. However, I think we're beyond that", Cook continued.

At the annual China Development Forum in Beijing, he said: "I think that this certain situation is so dire and has become so large that probably some well-crafted regulation is necessary". "You're the product", he wrote in an open letter to Apple customers in 2014.

Technically that is not a security breach, though Zuckerberg knows Facebook screwed up.

You're the product." Zuckerburg had mocked Cook's ridiculous concept by saying, " What, you think because you're paying Apple that you're somehow in alignment with them? "You are our customer".

In an interview about App Store policies, Apple CEO Tim Cook suggested watching adult content on Apple devices is not as bad an idea as the company's late founder Steve Jobs thought.

Meanwhile, famous Facebook users such as Elon Musk, Comedian Jim Carrey, Bollywood Actor Farhan Akhtar, and now Playboy have removed its official page from Facebook.
