Alfie Evans: father wants boy to go home following Rome rejection

Group to gather outside Wrexham courts to show support for Alfie Evans

"We got rejected yesterday to go to Italy, unfortunately", Evans said, according to the BBC.

However, his father, Tom, 21, appealed to the family's many supporters to step aside and allow them to "form a relationship" with Alder Hey Children's Hospital and go on to "build a bridge and walk across it".

The child, who is suffering from an undiagnosed degenerative brain disease, has been at the centre of a protracted legal fight in which United Kingdom doctors have argued that his condition will not improve, that he is suffering and should be allowed to die.

Doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool stopped providing life-support treatment late on Monday after Alfie's parents had lost two rounds of fights in the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights.

Tom Evans and Kate James wanted their son to be transported to Rome for treatment.

Transporting Alfie home with Tom and Kate would be impossible because of the hostility of protesters toward staff, hospital staff said previously in court.

He said there had been no deterioration in Alfie's condition since he was taken off a ventilator and he was not in pain.

A protest is planned for later today outside of Wrexham Law Courts on Bodhyfryd.

Alfie's plight has received considerable global media attention in recent days, especially in Italy and the United States.

"The end of life plan is in place and the hospital will now be managing it".

Italy has a military plane on standby to transport Alfie to Rome if the courts allow it. Alfie has also been granted Italian citizenship to facilitate his arrival and transport.

The letter continued: "Actions such as these have now brought the Alder Hey (Children's) Hospital to worldwide attention and, by extension, bring our whole profession into disrepute".

There have been threats to prosecute doctors at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, where the 23-month-old is being treated.

The hospital increased its security, and police said they were monitoring social media posts about the case for malicious communications.

"Worse still, patients and visitors to Alder Hey have also reported abuse".

The case has sparked a months-long court battle between the toddler's parents and the hospital, with leaders from around Europe weighing in.

"Alfie is doing good, 72 hours independent breathing", Evans added.

Mr Evans' lawyer, Paul Diamond, said: "We say the order of Mr Justice Hayden was simply to remove life-sustaining equipment because there is no medical cure".

The couple said their son had confounded specialists' expectations by continuing to breathe unaided despite being disconnected from a ventilator and provided with only palliative care.
