Trudeau: Canada's steel industry can breathe 'sigh of relief' after exemption

Canada will not bend to US steel tariff pressure in NAFTA talks, says Freeland

Trump said last week he would impose import tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent for aluminum, effective later this month, but exempted Canada after an intense lobbying campaign arranged by Ottawa.

This form of processing allows it to be stamped "made in Canada" and could avoid the USA tariff, which is why the federal enforcement officials will need to identify the country of origin of the original steel, said one industry executive who asked that his name not be used because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

President Donald Trump on Monday said US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will talk to European Union representatives about lowering their tariffs and other barriers to US products.

The EU rejected Mr Trump's argument that the tariffs are required for national security reasons. Canada has said that tariffs would hurt both the United States and Canada. "This episode has not changed our NAFTA negotiation position".

Mexico recognizes the problem of global steel oversupply and will keep seeking solutions, but NAFTA talks shouldn't be subject to other domestic United States policies, the country's Economy Ministry said in a statement.

Freeland notes the written presidential proclamation putting them in place does not. Trump did say he expected both Canada and Mexico to take action to prevent other countries from sneaking steel into the sending them to Canada or Mexico first.

"That was significant and we were glad to see that", she said.

Mr. Trudeau argued that Canada - the largest supply list of steel to the United States - is a key American defence ally and noted Canadian steel is used to manufacture USA tanks and Canadian aluminum is in America warplanes.

However Trump specifically mentioned NAFTA in his press conference announcing the exemptions on March 8.

"Cherry-picking particular tariffs in one category, like looking just at auto tariffs on both sides, misses the whole picture, while not taking into account lower levels on other products does not give an accurate picture of tariffs in general", a Commission spokesman said.

Mr. Trudeau also took Canada's case to USA cable channels on Monday with appearances on MSNBC and CNN. "It is bad for European citizens, for Dutch citizens and it will turn out bad for USA citizens as well". The president has often threatened to pull out of the trade pact unless the countries reach a deal that better serves USA interests. From there, she may travel to Washington, continue NAFTA talks although her spokesman would only say her schedule is still being finalized.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged on Monday that he personally reassured U.S. President Donald Trump last week that Canada won't become a transit station for offshore steel and aluminum into the U.S. market. He is scheduled to tour steel mills in Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Regina.
