Although not all overdoses in the study were fatal, they are part of the grim toll opioids have taken. In 16 states with particularly high overdose rates, shown in the CDC graphic below, the ER visit rate jumped by an average of 34.5 percent.

All five monitored regions revealed a spike in people with possible opioid overdoses between July 2016 and September 2017, according to data from the CDC's Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance Program.

The Vital Signs report was published online March 6 in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

TUESDAY, March 6, 2018 America's opioid epidemic is escalating at breakneck speed, with tens of thousands of overdose victims spilling into the nation's emergency rooms seeking lifesaving treatment, a new government report shows.

The Midwest experienced a 70 percent increase over that time, a spike that was driven by rises in Wisconsin of 109 percent, IL at 66 percent, and in at 35 percent. Another dramatic increase occurred in Pennsylvania, where overdoses went up 81%.

However, hospital visits in cities of all types increased steadily in each quarter by 51 percent.

Opioid overdoses increased for both sexes and all age groups.

Opioid addiction also has hooked its claws into all groups of US residents.

Promoting opioid prevention and treatment education.

Nearly 100 people are dying every day across America from opioid overdoses - more than vehicle crashes and shootings combined.

The largest drop was in Kentucky, where overdose ED visits declined by 15%.

The report claims that opioid overdoses and deaths can be prevented by providing medication-assisted treatment, naloxone (an overdose-reversing drug), treatment and referral services to people suffering from opioid use disorder, and coordinating efforts with other health departments, mental health care providers, community-based organizations and law enforcement.

Researchers from the CDC looked at emergency department data from 45 states, including North Carolina.

Every state in the Midwest region experienced large increases: Wisconsin (109 percent), IL (66 percent), in (35 percent), OH (28 percent) and Missouri (21 percent). Last week, Donald Trump expressed a desire to "sue" opioid manufacturers, and the attorney general, Jeff Sessions, announced the justice department's support of local lawsuits.

However, neither Congress nor the White House has appropriated new funding to treat people affected by the opioid crisis, despite pleas from public health officials, some of whom have put a starting price tag at $6bn. Others say one key could be training emergency room doctors and nurses to make sure addicts get help to break their addiction.
