Linda Brown From Historic Brown v. Board Case Passes Away

3rd grader when her father started a class-action suit in 1951 of the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kan

The Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel of Topeka, which is handling the funeral arrangement, confirmed that Brown died on Sunday afternoon, aged 75, the Associated Press reported, but no cause of death was released.

The supreme court case, Brown v Board of Education, led to a landmark decision to end school segregation in the US. The decision paved the way for a gradual and sometimes violent integration of schools and other public facilities, although many schools in the South - and even in Brown Thompson's home town - were not fully integrated for years. When you look at the diversity of our community, I think we're already honoring her legacy, ' she added.

But the case alone did not change the reality on the ground sufficiently, and Brown found herself continuing the fight 25 years later when she became one of eight parents who demanded the case to be reopened on the grounds that Topeka schools remained effectively segregated.

In 1954, after hearing arguments from future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the high court exposed that "separate but equal" standard as essentially convenient legal fiction.

Brown credited her father and the other families who took their cases to court for removing the "stigma of not having a choice" during a 1985 interview for the PBS documentary series "Eyes on the Prize".

Schools were not the only segregated areas in the United States: there were also separate restaurants, bathrooms and water fountains for blacks and whites in parts of the country - something protesters held sit-ins to oppose as part of the civil rights movement.

The school board prohibited the child from enrolling and Brown, an assistant pastor at St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, was angry that his daughter had to be shuttled miles away to go to school.

At the time of the decision, Brown said she was just happy she could attend Sumner, which still tried to bar her admission on the day the Supreme Court ruled in her favour.

Because Brown was the first name alphabetically on the plaintiff's list, the case was dubbed Brown v. Board of Education.

Linda Brown was born on February 20, 1943, in Topeka to Leola and Oliver Brown.

As for her role in the landmark case, Ms.

Her sister, Cheryl Brown Henderson, confirmed the death to The Topeka Capital-Journal. Later in life, Brown worked as a teacher.

Linda Brown was born in Topeka to Leola and Oliver Brown.

"I feel that after 30 years, looking back on Brown v. It was not easy for her or her family, but her sacrifice broke barriers and changed the meaning of equality in this country", Ms Ifill said in a statement. In fact, she said, "they didn't believe me". Brown was in an integrated junior high school. In addition, the district only had four schools designated for black students while there was a whopping 18 for white students.

"I remember the walk as being very long at that time".
