Dibaba strikes again, Russians take high jumps at world indoors

Laura Muir

After an uneventful first kilometer which was covered in a pedestrian 3:14.67, noted front-runner Konstanze Klosterhalfen -who broke the 30-year-old German indoor record with a solo effort of 8:36.01 at her domestic championships in Dortmund two weeks ago- was the first of the 14 finalists to move to the front with any objective.

Muir was hoping to emulate her remarkable indoor "double" of past year when she took gold in both the 1500m and 3000m at the European Championships in Belgrade, where she broke both European records in the process, but that dream was ended by defeat in a thrilling race on Thursday evening.

Muir went into this event as the double European indoor champion but her global record against tougher opposition had previously been less convincing.

Thursday's opening session of the March 1-4 championships will end with the women's 3,000 metres final with defending champion Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia and Britain's Laura Muir in action.

Liz's daughter Eilish was Muir's team-mate here and, like Muir, is doubling up at 1500m. I think I might bring a few notes down with me, I don't know what time I will have, but certainly I will be wanting to focus on the world indoors and do the best I can.

Muir, who was beaten by Dibaba and Hassan in the 3000m, added: 'I was very close to silver in the 3000m so I knew I just had to go for it this time.

"I didn't know we had broken away", Muir said about her final surge.

Muir set the pace from the start, but began to drop back with six laps to go only to break away with Dibaba and Hassan, with the trio finishing well clear of the pack. Dibaba then shot ahead in the final kilometre and began even more of a drive for home and now eight were left in the battle for medals. This is a great competition and the race was fantastic.

This was Dibaba's 4th indoor world title (3 straight at 3000m, plus a 1500m title from 2012) tying Meseret Defar for the most ever by a long-distance runner (Maria Mutola won seven 800m titles indoors). "It was very close but I had to play my cards right".

"I'm surprised at how well I balance veterinary and track. This day is for me and my country", said Dibaba, who is due to contest the 1500m heats tomorrow evening.

Birmingham-based Robbie Grabarz, who shared the Olympic bronze medal in 2012 and took silver in Portland, is the local hope. I had to dig in on that last lap. She did her utmost to try and chase down Dibaba but Dibaba was just too good.

"I feel I'm improving every year and getting stronger".

The evening's first medal events were lacklustre high jump competitions as the men's and women's finals were held simultaneously for the first time and there were plenty of failures early on, with Great Britain's hope, Robbie Grabarz, failing with his three attempts at 2.25m.

The American broke the 20-year-old 60m indoor world record when he clocked 6.34 seconds at the US Indoor Championships in New Mexico this month.

'I've previously finished fourth, sixth and seventh in world (and Olympic) finals before so to win two medals this time around is wonderful.

McColgan was disappointed with her 10th place in 9:01.32.
