Police mum on armor-piercing ammo in Vegas shooting

Douglas Haig right the man identified Tuesday as a

It says Haig didn't have a license to manufacture armor-piercing ammunition.

Haig made an initial court appearance before a federal magistrate in Phoenix and was freed under conditional release pending a February 15 status conference set for the case, prosecutors said.

If convicted he faces up to five years in prison.

A criminal complaint filed Friday morning is sealed in Nevada, but it appears in Arizona court records. Tracer ammunition leaves a flame behind the bullet.

He has since closed his ammunition business.

Haig told the news program he sold Paddock "tracer ammunition" that leaves a streak of light when fired.

Federal officials declined or didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Haig said there was no way he could see into Paddock's mine before that sale.

According to the court documents police also found unfired armor-piercing rounds within the hotel room.

When officers stormed the room they found Paddock dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During an October 19 search of Haig's home in Mesa, agents seized live ammunition that they identified as armor-piercing.

This is a breaking news story.

- The man who sold ammo to Las Vegas shooting suspect Stephen Paddock is being charged with manufacturing armor-piercing bullets.

Haig was named as a "person of interest" in the october 1 shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people.

Haig said Paddock was well-dressed, polite, and did not raise any suspicions when he purchased ammuniations rounds from him.

.

But the charging documents reveal that Haig told investigators that Paddock "took the time to go back to his vehicle to get gloves, which he put on prior to taking the box from Haig".

'He told me what he wanted, I gathered it up, put it in a box. "I handed him a box with the ammunition in it, and he paid me and he left". "At no time did I see anything suspicious or odd or any kind of a tell".

The shooting on October 1 left 58 people dead and hundreds injured.

"I was shocked that my name was the only one that was not redacted", he said.

It was unclear from the CBS interview whether Haig was still a person of interest.

In response to a question from CNN in January, the Clark County sheriff, Joe Lombardo, said federal authorities are investigating a person in the case.

Lombardo sought to dispel conspiracy theories linked to multiple gunmen or ties to Islamic State and took the unusual step of releasing his agency's preliminary investigative report. Investigators were in touch with Haig shortly after the shooting.

"I had no contribution to what Paddock did", Haig stated at the press conference.

Haig has since shut down has ammunition business.

Douglas Haig, 55, of Mesa, Ariz., became the first person arrested and charged in connection with the October 2017 massacre, which ranks as the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
