Asma Jahangir, a moderate face of Pakistan, passes away

Pakistan by Sarfraz Ali | Published

She reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and was taken to hospital, where she later died. Her daughter Muneezay Jahangir is a journalist and TV anchorperson.

Born on January 27, 1952, Jehangir had a prominent career both as a lawyer and rights activist.

One high-profile moment came in 2007, when Pakistan's dignified legal community launched a street protest movement to demand an end to military rule under army Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

There is still bad violence against women, discrimination against minorities and near-slavery for bonded labourers, Jahangir told AFP during an interview in 2014, but human rights have made greater strides in Pakistan than may be apparent.

She was again put under house arrest in November 2007 after the imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan.

Nobel prize victor Malala Yousafzai remarked: "Heartbroken that we lost Asma Jahangir - a saviour of democracy and human rights".

She got her LLB degree from University of Punjab in 1978. "And then the boot comes".

She was on Time magazine's list of 100 most influential women.

She was a staunch critic of Zia-ul-Haq's policies especially regarding implementing religious laws. "It's everyone's loss. What a sad day!" she said. In the process, she recounted, security agents began to strip off her clothes.

"I will not leave", she said.

The nation has been left shocked by her death.

Jahangir has represented several clients who were denied their fundamental rights and defended cases of minorities, women and children in prisons.

In an interview with DW following her win, Jagangir described the Swedish award as recognition of all rights activists in Pakistan who work under very hard circumstances. Sarwar was visiting Ms. Jehangir's and Jilani's law office in Lahore when Sarwar's parents and another man entered. Once, while representing a Christian boy sentenced to death for blasphemy against Islam, she was attacked by a violent mob outside the courthouse.

Zohra Yousuf, a former chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, said she lost a "great friend and great warrior of human rights". Legal associations across Pakistan announced three days of mourning. "May her soul rest in peace!", Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a tweet.

She received several awards, both national and global, for her incalculable efforts for human rights everywhere.

Jahangir is hailed as a South Asian feminist icon for her endless efforts towards women's liberation, and the abolishment of misogynistic laws and practices.

.

Asma Jahangir was the first woman to serve as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association. "I feel very proud that he went to jail because he did the right thing", she told The Daily Star in an interview after receiving the award.
