Rift between US, Turkey widens as Ankara presses Syrian offensive

Turkey on Saturday announced an air and ground offensive seeking to rout the Kurdish militia, known as the YPG, from Afrin, an enclave near the Turkish border. This operation's most important goals are to stop two terrorist organizations that carry out terrorist attacks against Turkey by using their safe havens in Afrin.

President Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to crush the YPG in Afrin, and also says he will target the Kurdish-held town of Manbij to the east, part of a much larger swath of northern Syria controlled by YPG-dominated forces.

The statement made it clear the U.S., at the time, was unclear if Turkey's attack was true, though Turkey's Defense Ministry has since clarified the invasion is underway, and that there is no stopping it.

The operation puts Turkey at odds with the U.S., which has logistically supported the Kurdish fighters as part of the fight against Islamic State. On Wednesday, the Pentagon said in a statement that the USA "continues to train local security forces in Syria ... this is not a new "army" or conventional "border guard" force".

"As the first step to take, they can stop arming terror groups and take back weapons already given".

Thousands of civilians in the northern Syrian region of Afrin are reportedly trying to flee as Turkey continues its ground offensive.

In order to show Turkey's good intentions, the government notified the U.N. Security Council, and all involved countries.

The United States has told Turkey "let us see if we can work with you to create the kind of security zone you might need", Tillerson said, according to a reporter traveling with him to Paris.

Erdogan also claimed that Turkey has reached an agreement with Russian Federation regarding the offensive.

But Turkey said Washington must end its support for the Kurdish YPG militia before any proposal for cooperation. "Once Assad is gone from power, the United States will gladly encourage the normalization of economic relationships between Syria and other nations". And it really does highlight the dangers of the Anglo-American strategy in Syria for the last seven years, which has been to basically turn Syria into a complete free-for-all: all the states in the region to sponsor their own proxy militias and get involved and carry out airstrikes - Israel, Turkey, the USA, anyone else.

But Aldar Khalil, co-leader of a Movement for a Democratic Society, told Reuters the likelihood that Kurdish officials would not go to Sochi was now greater than the likelihood of them attending the meeting.

It's not clear exactly how this posture on Syria evolved and who had leading roles constructing it.

US-backed Kurdish forces on Monday pleaded with Washington to halt a Turkish offensive against them as it prepared to send reinforcements to the region.

But Ankara has denied inflicting civilian casualties, with Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu accusing the YPG of sending out "nonsense propaganda and baseless lies".
