Reported Attacks On Silicon Valley Prompt Google, Apple Shuttle Buses To Reroute

An image sent to us from an anonymous source at Apple documenting the broken shuttle bus windows

Apple and Google shuttle buses, used for carrying employees from San Francisco to their out-of-town headquarters, have been subjected to a series of suspected pellet gun attacks over the past several days.

Google and Apple employees are looking at having their commute to work extended by 30 to 45 minutes. The company said in the email that they are changing route of coaches for the time being due to latest incidents of broken windows along the commute route, especially on highway 280.

The buses were not struck by accident, Montiel said. It is unclear at this time if rocks are being used but it has been suggested that someone might be using a pellet gun to take out the windows.

Shuttles run by Apple and Google in the San Francisco area have always been plagued by locals' expressions of resentment.

Apple's decision to build a data center in Reno in 2012 kickstarted a wave of big-name tech projects coming to the Reno area, as well as a new approach to economic development.

That being said, the buses of each of the tech firms are a distinct color: Google's are white, Apple's are silver and Facebook's are blue. Mashable obtained the email and has verified its authenticity.

All of the incidents happened on Tuesday on Interstate 280 between Highway 84 near Woodside and Highway 85 near Cupertino. There have been four reports at least regarding broken windows on January 16 and January 12.

Police do not know what caused the damage but have ruled out road debris such as rocks, agency spokesman Art Montiel said.

Apple confirmed to Mashable that buses are indeed being rerouted, and that it is working with law enforcement to investigate.

These shuttle buses have been targeted with vandalism before. Some believe these buses have become a constant reminder of the gentrification in and around Silicon Valley, however, and they have been the focus of protests in the past.

Apple and Google have yet to respond to NBC Bay Area's request for comment.

The buses typically do not bear names of companies, but acronyms for destinations that appear on the vehicle's digital banners can indicate to which tech campus they travel.
