Rep. Patrick Meehan will not seek re-election

Elizabeth of Oreland Montgomery County was one of the activists gathered in front of Congressman Pat Meehan’s Springfield office Thursday calling for his resignanation following allegations that he used taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment com

With Congressman Pat Meehan announcing that he will not seek re-election after getting caught up in a sexual harassment suit, the question is who will replace him on the ballot.

U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers, an Ohio Republican and chairman of the National Republican Campaign Committee, offered this: "While I'm disappointed by the circumstances leading to Congressman Meehan's retirement, I thank him for his dedication to his district", Stivers wrote.

Meehan explained that his use of the word soulmate was "in no way" meant to "suggest a romantic partnership", in a letter sent to his campaign chairman Thursday and first obtained by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

For Meehan, it landed as he already faced a hard reelection bid in the Seventh Congressional District, a moderate suburban district, in a year that has seen a sharp national backlash to sexual harassment.

A former aide claimed Meehan professed his love to her and grew hostile when she did not reciprocate, The New York Times reported last week. The report, which cites unnamed sources, alleges Meehan romantically pursued the younger staffer and became angry with her when she entered a romantic relationship with another man. Exact details about the settlement the two parties reached are unknown, in part because the money came from a congressional office fund that can disguise such payments as salary and report them much later, according to the Times.

Meehan told the Inquirer on Tuesday that he would repay the public funds used to settle the case if the House Ethics Committee's investigation finds that he harassed the woman.

Meehan called the controversy a distraction and said he needed "to own it because it is my own conduct that fueled the matter", according to the reports.

A Republican named Joe Billie, who was running on the grounds that Meehan wasn't sufficiently pro-Trump, is also in the race; here's an interview Billie gave to someone known as "Red Pill."

Meehan submitted a letter to his campaign chairman on Thursday announcing his decision to step down at the end of his term in 2018.

. "I think that the idea of soul mate is that sort of person that you go through remarkable experiences together". "I truly didn't even consider or understand the full implications of the use of that term".

"No characterization of the work relationship I shared with a uniquely close colleague could have been more personally harmful than when I described that co-worker as a 'soul-mate, '" wrote Meehan. For as little as $3, you can help us.
