Now it's Robert Mueller's turn to examine Steve Bannon

This is the cognitive test the president passed

Steve Bannon is embroiled in the rolling controversies emanating from the infamous new book about Donald Trump's presidency in which author, Michael Wolff writes of the former chief White House strategist's doubts of the president's mental fitness.

The New York Times reports this is the first known instance that someone from President Donald Trump's inner circle has been subpoenaed to testify in front of a grand jury in Mueller's investigation.

However, the summons could be a tactic to induce Bannon to cooperate fully with Mueller's investigation, the paper said.

As a top adviser to Trump during his campaign and presidency, Bannon would theoretically be privy to discussions about events Mueller is investigating.

Bannon recently lost his job at the helm of Trump-friendly Breitbart in part because of his recent comments about Trump and Russian Federation.

Mr Bannon, a champion of the "America First" agenda, was among Mr Trump's closest aides during the 2016 election campaign, the presidential transition and during his first months in office. The special counsel previously issued a grand jury subpoena for documents related to Mr Flynn's business dealings.

After the book's release, Trump quickly disavowed "Sloppy Steve Bannon" and argued extensively there was no evidence of collusion between his presidential campaign and operatives tied to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bannon said that he believed there was "zero" chance that the younger Trump did not take them to meet his father, who has said he knew nothing about the meeting. He said that his reference to treason was aimed at Manafort, not the president's son. With scandal, Bannon apologized.

The Bannon's observation about Ivanka was reported by The Wall Street Journal, which as reviewed Michael Wolff's new book.

"Specifically what's the basis for his assertion that the president met with the participants in the Trump Tower meeting", Schiff said in an interview with ABC News' Pierre Thomas.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, it appeared possible that Bannon could be interviewed all day by the House Intelligence panel - on par with other top tier witnesses who have been called before congressional investigators for marathon sessions.

Matt Apuzzo contributed reporting from Washington, and Maggie Haberman from NY.
