New review highlights potential risks and impact of e-cigarettes

Since the e-cigarette craze took over at the start of the decade, medical researchers have fiercely debated the health risks of vaping.

The jury is still out on whether electronic cigarettes will prove to have a net positive or negative impact on public health, according to a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. They contain fewer numbers and lower levels of toxic substances than conventional cigarettes, and using e-cigarettes may help adults who smoke conventional cigarettes quit smoking.

As such, they were suggested as being effective aids for adults to quit smoking, even though their long-term health effects are not yet clear.

"Among youth - who use e-cigarettes at higher rates than adults do - there is substantial evidence that e-cigarette use increases the risk of transitioning to smoking conventional cigarettes." the review said.

"E-cigarettes can not be simply categorized as either beneficial or harmful", said David Eaton, chair of the committee that wrote the report, and dean and vice-provost at the University of Washington.

David Eaton, the leader of the team that made the review, considers that E-Cigarettes reduce the risks of smoking-related diseases in adults but when it comes to kids and adolescents, E-Cigarettes are encouraging kids to smoke tobacco products.

E-Cigs are considered safer because the vaping process doesn't contain tar and other toxic elements that occur when smoking regular cigarettes.

For those who smoke though - and especially those who are trying to quit and find it very hard - switching from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes would be beneficial.

"E-cigarettes are not totally safe as they may cause some negative health effects, but they are less harmful than tobacco cigarettes", Gonievicz says.

There is conclusive evidence that e-cigarettes can explode and cause burns and projectile injuries.

However, there is "substantial evidence" that e-cigarette use by teens increases their risk of smoking tobacco.

Anti-smoking advocates have long argued that e-cigarettes are risky because of the potential to turn teens and even young children onto nicotine by luring them with kid-friendly flavors.

Swapping e-cigarettes for conventional cigarettes reduces users' exposure to numerous toxins and cancer-causing agents in regular cigarettes - conclusive evidence. Because of this variability, we are deeply concerned with FDA's decision to delay fully regulating e-cigarettes until 2022.

"There is substantial evidence that nicotine intake from e-cigarette devices among experienced adult e-cigarette users can be comparable to that from combustible tobacco cigarettes", the report reads.

WATKINS: It will expose them to different kinds of kids, maybe kids that are already using conventional cigarettes. These include new public-service campaigns to educate children about the harms associated with tobacco use, new actions to target the marketing of tobacco products to kids and additional partnerships with sister agencies to enhance the impact of the FDA's enforcement efforts. However, there was no available evidence to suggest e-cigarette smoking increases the risk of cancer.

The FDA review said some non-smokers, including young people, would likely experiment with iQOS. But public health groups, the surgeon general's office, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention worry about evidence that vaping can get teens addicted to nicotine, and will lead them to smoking cigarettes.
