May to welcome Macron to United Kingdom, discuss immigration

The tapestry has had a purpose-built home since 1983 having once been kept at Bayeux Cathedral

Speaking alongside British Prime Minister Theresa May at the UK's Sandhurst Military Academy, Macron said the treaty would ensure a "more human" approach to border control.

The tough message risked putting a sour note at the end of a meeting created to show the strength of Anglo-French relations, despite the UK's exit from the EU.

Migrants hoping to stow away on trucks bound for Britain have always been drawn to France's northern coast, with the squalid "Jungle" camp near Calais once housing about 10,000 people before it was bulldozed in late 2016.

Macron, on his first visit to the United Kingdom since winning the presidency in May 2017, also bears news that France will loan Britain the Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th-century panorama depicting the conquest of England by the Normans, from the Normandy region of what is now France. Before his election, Mr Macron had threatened to scrap the agreement but on Thursday he settled for more money from Britain and the promise to take in more unaccompanied minors from Calais.

"But it means you need to contribute to the budget and acknowledge the European jurisdiction".

She also confirmed that - a gesture President Macron said he hoped would "open a new chapter when it comes to our cultural co-operation and scientific co-operation".

The two countries now abide by the 15-year-old Treaty of Le Touquet, which permits immigration checks within each other's borders.

Previous bilateral summits have focussed on defence and security, foreign policy and nuclear energy, but Thursday's 35th summit will be "broadened to cover the full spectrum of the UK-France bilateral relationship including prosperity, innovation, science and education", it said.

He said the new treaty would allow him to fulfil his 2016 vow that after Brexit "migrants will no longer be in Calais".

Commitments will be made to a 10,000-strong Franco-Anglo combined joint expeditionary force to be ready by 2020.

Officials said it would build on the joint deployment of soldiers to the Baltic country whom the two leaders visited together previous year.

May agreed to provide funds for fences, security cameras, and other measures at the port town of Calais and nearby areas facing the English Channel.

Britain is to pledge to send three Chinook helicopters to Mali to offer logistical support for a French counterterrorism operation, while France will contribute troops to British-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Estonia in 2019, Reuters says.

Peter Allen said French President Emmanuel Macron is very good at packaging up a poor deal in very friendly terms - and the Prime Minister has fallen for it.

The Elysee official said the loan fitted into Macron's strategy for the revival of European sovereignty and democracy, detailed in a speech in Athens in September previous year during which he spoke about the importance of cultural and historic ties between European nations.

In a statement about the military cooperation, Theresa May emphasised the UK's continued link to Europe post-Brexit.
