Marcus Mariota throws touchdown to himself against Chiefs

Ta da! Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota catches his own pass for a nifty touchdown.

The two-point conversion attempt failed - and almost brought disaster for the Titans when Mariota was sacked, but officials ruled he was down before the ball came loose.

The Chiefs took a commanding 21-3 lead into halftime, but they failed to score the rest of the game.

Mariota's touchdown pass - and reception, for that matter - capped a 15-play, 91-yard drive that took 8:29 and ultimately trimmed the Titans' deficit to 21-10. However, under the tutelage of head coach Andy Reid, they have never made it to the Super Bowl. They also entered with a cloud of doubt as the Chiefs hadn't won a playoff game at home in 24 years.

The team is led by rookie running back Kareem Hunt who led the league in rushing (1,327 yards). Mariota rolled out on the play, tried to fit in a dart to WR Corey Davis, but his pass was knocked down, and as Mariota was falling off balance to his left, he located the ball, caught the deflection and dove into the near left corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

Saturday's outcome, the latest in a cavalcade of brutal playoff exits, extended the Chiefs' home playoff drought another year. Kelce, who appeared to be dazed after the play, suffered a concussion and did not return for the second half. The Titans went for a 2-point conversion.

With almost six minutes left in the game, the Chiefs still had an opportunity to retake the lead.

The Chiefs still led 21-10 at that point, but the offense had gone cold.

The Chiefs needed a break, and seemed to get it when Peters stripped the ball from Henry; Johnson recovered the ball and ran it back 56 yards. But even though there was a fireworks display that momentarily gave Chiefs fans hope, a replay clearly showed Henry was down before the ball came out.

Smith is 8 of 11 for 154 yards and the score.

The Titans drove into Chiefs territory midway through the second quarter but Peters intercepted an underthrown pass from Mariota in the red zone, ending the threat. Three first downs brought the Chiefs to the Titans' 44-yard line, but Smith's fourth-and-9 pass over the middle bounced off receiver Albert Wilson's fingertips, and the Titans retook possession with a little over two minutes remaining.
