A man in his 60s died in hospital after "he picked up an object off the ground which promptly exploded", police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson told AFP. The man reportedly was in serious condition.

"That's all we know", a local fire service chief told Swedish Television, which also reported that police and medics were at the location.

"These two people cycled past the object and stopped to see what was on the ground".

A 45-year-old woman was injured in the blast, which police said was not believed to be terror-related.

"It is too early to say", Mr Olsson said.

But police haven't confirmed the exact nature of the explosive device.

According to a Swedish police report published past year, Sweden is the European country where criminal gangs use the most grenades, often from stocks from the former Yugoslavia.

Police said fragment damages on the victims and findings at the scene indicated the explosive could be a hand grenade, possibly an old one.

On Sunday morning, police searched the area around the station, which was cordoned off as a bomb squad was called in to carry out an investigation.
