Macron hints at EU-UK trade compromise

Brexit news Emmanuel Macron Angela Merkel EU UK

Asked why he wanted to exclude financial services from a future UK-EU free trade agreement, Mr Macron said: "I am here neither to punish nor to reward".

Mr Macron's comments came during his, where he held talks with Prime Minister Theresa May.

He added: "And you should understand that you can not, by definition, have the full access to the single market if you don't tick the box".

"If you want access for financial services, be my guest - but it means you have to contribute to the budget, and accept European jurisdiction".

However he warned the United Kingdom could not "cherry-pick" the elements it liked, saying "because that's a dismantling of the single market".

French President Emmanuel Macron warns the United Kingdom that a future trade deal with the European Union after Brexit won't give "full access" to the EU's single market and financial services.

"As soon as you decide not to join these preconditions, it's not a full access", Macron told the BBC.

The French president said that a special solution could be secured, but that full access to the single market without accepting its rules was "not feasible".

He said: "I am not the one to judge or comment on the decision of your people".

It's Macron's first visit to Britain since he became president of France in May 2017.

Speaking to BBC's Andrew Marr, Macron said Trump is not a "classical politician"; he also criticised the USA president's alleged comments about African countries and called for respectful relationships.

Mr Macron told Marr the United Kingdom would have to contribute to if they wanted to protect their financial services.

Mr Macron said: "It doesn't make sense because it's part of the whole financing of our European Union".

"I think a lot of our issues in both the Middle East and in Africa is due to a lot of frustrations due to a lot of past humiliations", Macron said.

The venue — the Sandhurst military academy southwest of London — was selected as a signal that the relationship between western Europe's two biggest military powers won't be weakened once the United Kingdom leaves the European Union in 2019.

Britain agreed Thursday to pay 44.5 million pounds ($62 million) for fences, security cameras and other measures in Calais and nearby English Channel ports.
