Intel Haswell and Broadwell Reboot Issue Cause Identified

Patches are being developed by Intel and then pushed out to their OEM partners who then send these out to end-user customers as BIOS updates or operating system patches depending on which of the three issues, that are collectively known as Spectre and Meltdown, they fix. Initial patches for the vulnerabilities have already begun rolling out, but have been hit by various problems, including a frequent reboot issue. Specifically, it is causing unexpected reboot issues.

Intel hasn't said when fixed patches will be available for other architectures, but notes that the Broadwell and Haswell fixes should help it address the reboot problems on other platforms. However, until then, Intel is changing their tune in terms of updating. The stability issues were initially thought to be contained to older Broadwell and Haswell chips, but Intel confirmed last week it was also happening on Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and Kaby Lake processors.

Shenoy offered no timing details about patch releases but promised to share more details "later this week".

Navin Shenoy, Intel's vice president of data centres, apologised for the the disruption and advised all users to stop applying the current patches.

The company published a full list of Intel-based platforms that are impacted by this problem, and it's quite long.

Intel recently promised that all of its processors from the past five years would be protected against the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities by the end of January, and this is proving to be more hard than expected.

And, hopefully, those left out in the cold by Intel should soon (Intel promises!) have a fix coming their way.

A new version of the Meltdown/Spectre patches has been developed and is now in testing, Intel said. "I assure you we are working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues", added Shenoy.
