Hong Kong activist jailed a second time for 2014 protests

Pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong

On Wednesday, the Court of First Instance sentenced Raphael Wong and Joshua Wong to 4.5 months and three months in prison respectively over the involvement in the clearance of a Mong Kok Occupy site in 2014.

Ahead of the hearing, Joshua Wong - who became the teenage face of the Umbrella Movement - said he had "no regrets" about his involvement.

Mr Wong is secretary-general of the Demosisto party, which calls for self-determination for Hong Kong, having risen to prominence as a student leader during the 2014 protests with the Scholarism movement he founded as a teenager.

Wong had pleaded guilty a year ago for failing to comply with a court order to clear out of a protest camp during the 79-day gathering in the semiautonomous Chinese city.

Tian made the remarks after the region's high court sentenced "Occupy Central" activists to a few months in jail on Wednesday.

As he was being taken away to jail, Raphael Wong said: "Thank you, your honour, for your ruling".

The prison term dealt the latest blow to Wong, who was sentenced in August to six months in prison after he was found guilty of unlawful assembly.

Chan denied both bail but defence lawyers pushed for him to reconsider his decision and were granted a further hearing yesterday afternoon.

They were countered by a small group of pro-Beijing protesters waving the national flag of China and supporting Hong Kong's department of justice.

The High Court also gave suspended sentences of 12 or 18 months to 14 others, some of whom such as Lester Shum were also fined between HK$10,000 (around US$1,280) and HK$15,000.

Several others involved in the 2014 demonstrations received suspended sentences, according to the South China Morning Post, with the sentences ranging in length from one to two months.

The former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997 amid promises that it would keep a high degree of autonomy, but activists accuse Beijing of tightening control in recent years.

According to the Basic Law, the mini-constitution in effect since Hong Kong's handover to China, Beijing promised to allow elections of the city's leader and legislators by universal suffrage as an "ultimate aim" under the "one country, two systems" arrangement. But young people in particular have been highly critical of the ruling body, saying pressure from the Chinese government is threatening freedom of speech and judicial independence.
