Here's everything you need to know about the protests rocking Iran

Protests hit Iran as government warns against `illegal gatherings

Protests and criticism, not involving violence, are the constitutional rights of the Iranians, the country's President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday.

"This gentleman in America, who is now trying to sympathise with our nation, appears to have forgotten that he called the Iranian nation terrorists several months ago", he was reported to have said.

Protesters "must certainly know that improper behavior will be to their detriment, and the nation will come out and stand against these actions and throw a hard punch in their faces", the Revolutionary Guard's commander for security in Tehran, Brigadier General Esmail Kowsari, said according to a statement carried by the semi-official Iranian Students' News Agency late Saturday.

"This is not like anything I have seen before, there are people from everywhere, protesting against everything" said Layla, a young media professional.

On Sunday, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov wrote on Twitter that authorities had blocked all access to the app.

The unrest began as a protest over rising prices and other economic difficulties, and quickly grew into a nationwide outpouring of anger against the government, including over corruption.

The source said: "With a decision by the Supreme National Security Council, activities of Telegram and Instagram are temporarily limited".

Facebook, based in Menlo Park, California, declined to comment.

Facebook itself has been banned in Iran since the 2009 protests that followed the re-election of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. However, some in Iran access it and other banned websites using virtual private networks.

"Violent clashes broke out in the illegal demonstration in Dorud on Saturday and unfortunately two people were killed", Habibollah Khojastehpour, deputy governor of Lorestan province, said in an interview on state television on Sunday.

Authorities said Iranian security forces were not responsible for the deaths and instead blamed Sunni Muslim extremists and foreign actors.

However, the reformist Etemad newspaper quoted Hamid Reza Kazemi, a Lorestan lawmaker, as saying police did open fire during the clashes.

Thousands have taken to the streets of cities across Iran, beginning on Thursday in Mashhad, the country's second-largest city and a holy site for Shiite pilgrims.

It seems like Donald Trump isn't slowing down with his tweets before the end of the new year.

And when that happened, state media was also forced to acknowledge that it had not initially reported on the protests on the orders of security officials.

Trump, whose travel bans have blocked Iranians from getting USA visas, again tweeted about the protests Sunday.

US President Donald Trump weighed in on the protests, saying "oppressive regimes can not endure forever".
