Four powerlifters died in a road accident caused due to dense fog

The force of the impact was so high that the car’s roof was completely blown off police said

The victims were on the Delhi-Panipat highway in a Swift Dzire vehicle which police believe was being driven at high speed, although fog had drastically reduced visibility.

The four lifters - Tikamchand, Saurabh, Yogesh and Harish Roy - were rushed to the Raja Harishchandra Hospital, but were declared "dead on arrival". Saksham was travelling with four other powerlifters who died on spot.

The private auto carrying the six athletes crashed with a road divider, after its driver lost control over the steering, on the road and turned turtle near Alipur village around 4:00am.

Another weightlifter, Rohit, 19, is battling for life. Some liquor bottles have been found in the vehicle hinting towards a possibility of drunken driving. "He has internal bleeding in the head", said a senior doctor at AIIMS.

With the fog and smog conditions severely clouding visibility, one must ensure their own safety and that of other's around them on the roads by adhering to speed limits or even going below them to stay safe.

Police are also probing the angle of drunken driving.

Police said that they were driving towards Karnal in Haryana after the birthday celebrations of one of the occupants of the vehicle.

Locals informed police officials that the auto was being driven at a very high speed and the driver lost control when he was trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into a roadside pole due to which it overturned. Due to the impact of the crash, the car's roof was blown away.

The accident took place on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.
