Facebook's news feed changes are latest blow to publishers, brands

Zuckerberg changes Facebook's focus to be more 'meaningful'

Facebook's chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company will be rolling out a number of changes to the content that people will be seeing in their social media feeds. The goal of the product teams would be to help Facebook's more than 2 billion monthly users find content that will lead to more meaningful social interactions, he said.

About the new change, he writes, "You'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and the media". People will likely spend less time on Facebook as a result, the company says.

It's easy to understand how we got here.

"Pages making posts that people generally don't react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution".

The US election in 2016 saw a string of adverts making misleading or factually inaccurate statements about political candidates gain traction on the site.

Facebook and companies from Twitter to Apple have been confronting a mounting public backlash against technology and social media, as the public grapples with a constantly connected life in which they are exposed to fake or biased news, cyber bullying and even internet addiction.

Mic, Mashable, Bored Panda, and so many other publishers have built most of their business around the content favored by Facebook's ever-changing algorithm. Additionally, content from news publishers and brands will be given less exposure on the news feed.

You will be seeing a click down arrow on the top right side of your desktop view of Facebook, click on that icon and go to "News Feed Preferences". With the latest changes, you'll see few viral videos and news articles provided by media companies.

The trend away from business posts is not new, he said.

He quoted an academic research pointing out that interactions with the loved ones are more healthy and important for a person's wellbeing, instead of just reading news articles or watching shared videos.

In a note earlier this week, Wieser reported Nielsen data showing that in September - the most recent month for which this data is available - core Facebook consumption failed to grow year-over-year for a second consecutive month.

This doesn't come as a surprise for Facebook as Zuckerberg expected the move to have a negative impact on engagement and time spent logged in but believes that a temporary hit is worth it to enhance the wellbeing of members.

What does this mean for Pages and public content?

And the public content more seen would be permitted on the same footings that it should be such to boost meaningful and healthy people to people interactions.

This initiative would result in causing people to spend much less time on the social networking giant.

As some marketers have also pointed out, this means that Page owners are now going to have to start paying Facebook more money in the future in order to reach the same number of people they used to reach in the past. Facebook has also indicated that postings which generate the most engagement or reactions will always get first look in their algorithms. By focusing on bringing people closer together-whether it's with family and friends, or around important moments in the world-we can help make sure that Facebook is time well spent.
