DACA Recipients Can Apply for Renewal

Federal Agency Returns to Accepting Requests Under DACA

US President Donald Trump on Sunday pushed for a merit-based immigration system, saying he wants only those people who can help America become "strong and great again".

On Wednesday, he said a merit-based system will allow only people with "great track record" to enter the country.

While Democrats have expressed openness to a deal that would combine legal status for "dreamers", as the group of young immigrants brought illegally as children are known, with funding for border security measures, Republicans have tried to broaden the talks.

"I do not believe DACA is dead", Nielsen said on "Fox News Sunday".

In remarks on Twitter, Donald Trump said he did not believe the opposition party truly wanted to negotiate a new arrangement for so-called Dreamers (undocumented migrants brought to the USA illegally when they were children), 690,000 of whom are now shielded from deportation by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, Efe reported.

The sole Democratic participant in the Oval Office meeting, Senate Minority Whip Richard J. Durbin of IL, told reporters Friday that Trump had used the vulgar word "not just once but repeatedly" during the meeting. He called the new stories a "gross misrepresentation".

Republican Senator Jeff Flake said Sunday he was told about the remarks by colleagues who attended the meeting, before the news reports emerged. "I can not believe in the history of the White House, in that Oval Office, any president has ever spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday".

"I still think that he should apologize", she said on CNN's "State of the Union".

The announcement comes four days after a federal judge in San Francisco ordered the Trump administration to restart the DACAprogram until a lawsuit challenging the administration's decision to end the program plays out in court. "I use those words advisedly", he said.

Perdue and Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., had issued a joint statement Friday saying they "do not recall the President saying those comments specifically".

The Trump administration has resumed receiving renewal applications for individuals eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. "But what we have to do is not let that define this moment", said Republican Senator Cory Gardner on CBS's "Face the Nation" program. She said that the bipartisan proposal rejected by Trump did not address core security issues facing her department and that Trump's administration was not interested in "half measures". Trump later declared "the language used by me at the DACA meeting [Thursday] was tough, but this was not the language used". Dick Durbin, D-Ill.: "Republicans and Democrats negotiated in good faith to reach a deal that gives you what you asked for in front of the country on Tuesday".

Among those present at the meeting were Sen.
