Burger King Joins the Fight for Net Neutrality With New Ad

In it, customers at a Los Angeles restaurant impatiently wait at the counter for Whoppers while others who, they are told, had paid more, received faster service.

In the advert, Burger King surprised customers with a selection of different prices for the same Whopper, mimicking the repeal of net neutrality.

One of the fears expressed by backers of net neutrality is that the repeal opens the door to allow internet service providers (ISPs) to charge customers more for faster access to certain websites and services - similar to the scenario satirized by Burger King's video.

While a vote by the FCC last December essentially overturned regulations preventing telecom companies from tiering the internet in this way, some USA legislators, citizens and companies have continued efforts to protect net neutrality, and that list has now expanded to include Burger King.

Burger King - a fast-food chain that sells cheap beef - apparently understands net neutrality more than the average member of Congress.

"The repeal of Net Neutrality is a hot topic in America, but it can be very hard to understand".

Burger King said in a YouTube description of the video that it "Believes the internet should be like the Whopper sandwich: the same for everyone". Naturally, the customers are angry - Burger King claims those in the ad were real guests, though we're skeptical as to what that really means. The video then directs viewers to a Change.org petition supporting net neutrality. Last October, the fast food chain used burgers and hidden cameras for a weirdly moving anti-bullying PSA, and now they're busting out the Whopper again as an educational tool.

John Oliver called attention to net neutrality on "Last Week Tonight". A range of consumer groups, Internet pioneers and large tech companies - from Google to Microsoft - argued against the repeal.

"Whopper Neutrality" was released on Burger King's social media channels.

The clip closes with Burger King's royal King mascot drinking out of an overized Reese's Peanut Butter Cup mug, just like the one that FCC chairman Ajit Pai has caught heat for using.

More: Net neutrality: The FCC voted to end it.

Enter, surprisingly, Burger King.
