Arab coalition to gives $1.5bn in Yemen aid

Saudi blockade of Yemen set to resume after brief respite

The coalition promised to keep all ports open, including the Hodeidah port, to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Yemenis, considering the blockade of Houthis on ports under their control.

The coalition also said it would "increase the capacities of Yemeni ports to receive humanitarian" imports, as it faces mounting criticism for imposing a crippling blockade on the country.

Saudi Arabia's announcement today is being followed by a press conference as the kingdom and its embassies overseas assertively promote the country's recent humanitarian efforts in Yemen, including a deposit of United States dollars 2 billion in Yemen's Central Bank last week after an urgent appeal was made to save the currency from collapse and the country from "inevitable famine".

Maliki said: "This hostile action by the Houthi group backed by Iran proves the continued involvement of the Iranian regime's support to the Houthi armed group with qualitative capabilities in clear and explicit defiance of the violation of United Nations resolution (2216) and resolution (2231) in order to threaten the security of Saudi Arabia and threaten regional and global security".

"The Houthis are responsible for the destruction and devastation in Yemen", he said, accusing Iran of supplying the rebels with more than 60 ballistic missiles that have been fired at the kingdom. There were no reports of casualties or damage.

Currently, 1.3-million people "urgently require assistance to survive.a generation of children is growing up in suffering and deprivation", added the OCHA.

DW notes that German arms exports to Saudi Arabia totalled nearly $550m in 2017.

Steffa Seibert, a spokesperson for Merkel, wrote on Friday, that Germany "isn't taking any arms exports decisions right now that aren't in line with the results of the preliminary talks".

More than 10,000 people have been killed by coalition airstrikes and by fighting on the ground, Reuters said. The U.S. supports the coalition with refuelling, logistics and intelligence.

Aid groups that say coalition airstrikes are destroying critical infrastructure and that the coalition needs to do more to facilitate the delivery of staple goods at Yemen's ports.

Earlier this month, UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock called for sustained and higher levels of imports, particularly through ports at Hodeida and Salif, which are in rebel-held territory.

Another almost 2 200 Yemenis have died of cholera amid deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions, the World Health Organisation says.
