10% of Developers Plan to Introduce Loot Boxes in their Next Games

Switch Sees Positive Growth at GDC 2018

This year's GDC State of the Industry 2018 includes some useful insight, what excited us the most though was the fact that there is a rise in the interest of developing games for the Nintendo Switch. About 12 percent say they're now developing games for the platform (that's up from three percent last year). Only 1% of the developers that were surveyed are making a game on the two platforms, meaning that the total percentage of developers now making a game for Nintendo systems is 14%.

But while interest in Switch is growing, PlayStation 4 remains the primary console on which developers are focusing their attention. No one wanted to make games for the Wii U because they didn't think their games would sell on the Wii U. That hasn't been an issue for Switch developers though, as 23% say that their games sell as well on the Switch as on other consoles, and 28% say they actually sell better. Still, 71% believe VR and AR are long-term sustainable businesses, and even if that's a slight drop from last year's 75%, it's still a solid amount of stated support for the platforms.

Despite the controversy surrounding loot crates, 11 percent of respondents, or about one in 10 developers, are working on a game with a monetization strategy that uses loot boxes.

Virtual reality, meanwhile, appears as though it may be in the initial stage of a popularity downturn. Last year, 24% of respondents said they're working on a VR game, while this year that number has dwindled to 17%.

Confidence in VR is down, but the Vive is still the most popular VR headset.

Across all games, loot box or not, just under half of the developers surveyed said they were releasing a traditional, paid game, with 39% saying their next title would be "free to download".

12% of developers are now making a game for Switch in 2018. The Switch also is 1 of the 3 platforms developers picked as most interesting at the moment.
