You Can Manage Your Identity on Facebook Using Face Recognition

Now, if you're in a photo and are part of the audience for that post, we'll notify you, even if you haven't been tagged.

Facebook announced Tuesday a new use for its facial recognition technology.

Facebook will also notify you when someone else uses a photo of you for a profile picture. Facebook still respects the privacy settings of people posting photos, so you won't get a notification for photos when you're not in the audience.

Both features will be turned on-or-off via a single toggle in Facebook's settings, Candela said.

The objective of the feature, according to Facebook, is to help users better manage their online identity.

Facebook's database of facial recognition has an impression of users' faces, which it calls a template.

The features demonstrate how Facebook is using a trove of facial recognition data, a type of data that has become a key focus for tech titans. In line with ongoing advancements in facial recognition technology, Facebook will do this even if you're not tagged. The goal of the scanning, according to Facebook, is to alert you if someone has publicly uploaded a photo of you that you don't know about, especially if they are trying to impersonate you.

Facebook is also planning to roll out a "simple on/off switch" to replace the settings for individual features that use face-recognition technology.

Facebook jumped ahead of potential privacy fears today with another of its Hard Questions posts, addressing some of the concerns users might have over the social network's growing use of facial recognition technology.

But Facebook doesn't shy from explaining that this service could also be used to catch people who are using photos for less-than-wholesome purposes, such as using your photo as their Facebook profile photo.

"We are now using various signals (like an IP address) to help us proactively recognize this type of account and prevent its owner from sending a message or friend request to the person who blocked the original account", Antigone Davis, Facebook's global head of safety, wrote in a post . According to Sherman, this option will "completely turn off face recognition technology" for a user's account.
