Yemen's Saleh killed in ambush

Yemen fighting will lead to 'more tragedy'

Sources in Mr Saleh's party confirmed he died in an attack on his convoy.

The clashes between Saleh's supporters and the Houthis underscore the complex situation in Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, where a proxy war between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-backed Hadi has caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in recent times.

Fighting erupted between the Iranian-allied Shiite rebels and forces loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh last week, unraveling their fragile alliance, formed in the face of the internationally-recognized government and Saudi-led coalition. Today the former president Ali Abdullah Saleh lies dead, killed in an ambush by his former allies, the Houthi rebels.

The war in Yemen, the Arab world's most destitute country, plunged into a new and uncertain chapter Monday when its former president was killed amid an explosive bout of fighting that has convulsed the capital.

In a statement read out on a Houthi television network, the interior ministry announced the "killing" of "Saleh and his supporters".

A video showed Saleh's body, motionless, blood staining his shirt and a gaping wound In his head.

It was a bitter end for the former president who had ruled the north of Yemen and then a united north and south for almost 34 years.

Houthi went on to blast Saleh for betraying the loyalty of those he had worked with and claimed the ordinary people of the capital could not understand how he had changed sides after three years of denouncing the Saudi-led coalition. Therefore, Houthis finally chose to kill him; not because he turned against them, but because he is capable of destroying their political project.Days ago, Saleh changed the map when he annulled his alliance with Houthis.

"I call upon the brothers in neighboring states and the alliance to stop their aggression, lift the siege, open the airports and allow food aid and the saving of the wounded and we will turn a new page by virtue of our neighborliness", Saleh said in a televised speech. He continued to be a leader despite being forced to resign as a result of the people's protests. Moreover, after an attempt to assassinate him in Al-Nahdeen Mosque, everyone thought Saleh was done, but he spent months receiving treatment for his burns at Riyadh Military Hospital and surprised everyone with his return to continue to rule Sanaa and lead political and military battles.

The Houthis accused Saleh of betrayal, and vowed to keep up the fight against the Saudi-led coalition. He did not mention Mr Saleh's death.
