World Health Organization to classify video game addiction as mental illness

The World Health Organization will name obsessive video game playing a mental health disorder in 2018

BINGING on video games will be classified as signs of a mental disorder for the first time next year.

Under the new guidelines of the World Health Organisation (WHO), excess gaming could be labeled a mental health condition.

The addition comes in the recent draft of ICT-11, which is scheduled to be released in 2018.

World Health Organization defines gaming behavior as "impaired control over gaming" (ie, how often and for how long one plays game), "increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests", and "continuation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences", (such as being fired, or missing too much school).

Symptoms of the disorder include a strong desire to play video games, increased time spent playing and withdrawal symptoms when games are taken away.

Gaming covers any activity from playing Two Dots on your iPhone to sitting down in front of a custom-built gaming PC for hours.

The addition of this this condition would mean that Gaming Disorder could be diagnosed by a physician or recognized by insurance providers. In other words, it has to be intense enough to harm personal relationships or interfere with school or work. According to CBS, Husack "says the designation is long overdue and that addiction to video games is a hidden but widespread problem". The analysis, which appeared in the American Journal of Psychiatry revealed that around 3 percent of people playing video game turn their hobby into an addiction.

Second, some research has indicated that "video game addiction" is not a stable construct and clinical impairment might be low. But for some people online, it was hard for them to take the addition seriously. Compulsive gaming and problematic substance use can also go hand in hand. Research also shows that gaming can quicken decision making. University of Oxford psychologist Andrew Przybylski told Kotaku it was a "very bad idea" that could risk "stigmatizing millions of players and may divert limited mental health resources from core psychiatric problems such as depression or anxiety".

Originally founded in 1948, the World Health Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, aims to "build a better, healthier future" with their involvement in global public health across the globe.
