White House officials tamp down speculation about firing special counsel Robert Mueller

Opponents of special counsel Robert Mueller ramped up their attacks over the weekend with a new claim that he improperly collected thousands of emails from President Trump's transition team and is using them as an illegitimate basis for much of his investigation.

Two administration officials meanwhile Sunday sought to downplay speculation that Trump was preparing to fire Mueller, who was appointed after Trump abruptly fired then Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, who was leading an agency probe into the Russian Federation affair. Ohio Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan, said that if everyone on Mueller's team who was "anti-Trump" were kicked off the investigation, "I don't know if there'd be anyone left.' Jordan also added that "the public trust in this whole thing is gone", referring to the Mueller inquiry NBC reported".

Mueller was appointed earlier this year as a Justice Department special counsel to determine whether Trump associates colluded with Moscow to influence the outcome of the 2016 White House race.

The transfer of these documents is "unlawful conduct that undermines the Presidential Transition Act of 1963", the letter states, "and will impair the ability of future presidential transition teams to candidly discuss policy and internal matters that benefit the country as a whole".

Lankford, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, emphasized the importance of whether or not the agent was "directing the investigation one way or the other".

"Obviously I don't think it taints the entire process, but it certainly taints that season of it", Lankford said.

Democratic lawmakers in recent days have expressed concern that Trump might fire Mueller, who is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and whether Trump or anyone on his team colluded with Moscow. And she speculated that Republicans are trying to shut down the House Intelligence committee's Russian Federation probe. "The President's lawyers have said they want to fully comply with Special Counsel Mueller's investigation, so it is odd that they now suggest they would have withheld key documents from federal investigators".

Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, tweeted his own concerns on Friday, saying, "I'm increasingly anxious Republicans will shut down the House Intelligence Committee investigation at the end of the month".

But late Saturday, another GSA official present for the conversation told Buzzfeed News that there was nothing improper about the disclosure of the emails to Mueller's team.

"Well, it's a shame what's happened with the FBI", Trump said. The reason for his dismissal appears to stem from Mueller's discovery that Strzok exchanged text messages critical of Trump with a lawyer assigned to the probe. "I can't imagine there's anything on them, frankly".
