The ministry said he killed two people when he opened fire on a shop before heading to the church where he shot dead seven people, including a policeman.

The gunman was also killed, along with at least one police officer, officials said.

Egypt has witnessed several terrorist attacks in recent years, including the bombing of two churches north of the country on Palm Sunday; On April 9, two explosions targeted churches in Tanta, north of Cairo, and Alexandria during Palm Sunday services, leaving at least 44 dead and over 70 injured.

Two men on a motorcycle opened fire and tried to storm the Mar Mina church in Helwan City on Friday, which led to a shootout between the attackers and security officers, according to Egypt's Health Ministry spokesman. Gerges said he was walking in a nearby street when the shooting happened.

At least one militant was killed in a shootout outside a church south of Cairo on Friday, state-media reported.

President Donald Trump is condemning an attack on Coptic Christians in Egypt Friday.

The so-called Islamic State group said it was behind the attack.

The attack came amid tightened security around churches and Christian facilities ahead of the Coptic Orthodox Christian celebrations of Christmas on January 7.

Security forces went on high alert for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

A video circulated on social media after the attack appeared to show the dead gunman on the ground. It also said there was a separate attack on a store in the same suburb of Helwan that killed two Copts.

On Friday night, bodies of the six victims from the bloody attack arrived at the district's archbishopric for the official funeral, covered with Egyptian flags and were received by their families, while a number of official figures were present. Authorities have closed off the area around the church. Al Arabiya TV channel reported that one of the accomplices of the terrorists fled the scene.
