Trump asks Saudi Arabia to allow immediate aid to Yemen

YEMEN-SANAA-CLASH-AFTERMATH

Houthi rebels have blown up the residence of Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Saudi-led coalition battling the rebels had thrown its support behind Saleh just hours before his death, as the longtime strongman's alliance with the rebels unraveled. "We call on the Houthi rebels to immediately release the TV channel's journalists".

Yemen's war, pitting the Iran-allied Houthis who control Sanaa against a Saudi-led military alliance backing a government based in the south, has brought what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The intervention by Ahmed Ali, a former leader of the elite republican guard once seen as a likely successor to his father, gives the anti-Houthi movement a potential figurehead after a week of fighting that saw the Houthis rout Saleh's supporters in the capital. The two camps had together been fighting pro-government forces backed by a Saudi-led military coalition that includes the UAE.

The gruesome images from the previous day sent shockwaves among Saleh's followers - a grisly end recalling that of his contemporary, Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, in 2011.

Some 41 Yemeni journalists have been held captive by Houthi fighters at the television station in Sana'a, Al Jazeera reported today.

However, close sources have denied the reports that Saleh was killed.

The fresh violence has increased fears for civilian victims of Yemen's war, which has claimed more than 8,750 lives since the Saudi-led coalition intervened.

In other areas like Fag Attan, Saleh's forces are still surrounded by Houthis.

Without mentioning Saleh by name, he said that he knew about Saleh's communication with the coalition and his efforts to turn against the Houthis.

The bloody conflict has left impoverished Yemen as the world's leading humanitarian disasters with millions of people facing starvation.

From the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where he has been in self-imposed exile for most of the war, Hadi tried on Monday to rally Saleh's allies to keep up the fight against the Houthis.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says that as many as 234 people have been killed in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in street fighting this month between the country's Shiite rebels and the supporters of the slain former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Houthi supporters massed in their thousands near the capital's global airport, shouting "Sanaa is free and the state still stands!" and "Yemenis are one!" as rebel chiefs struck a conciliatory tone, declaring they were "ensuring the safety" of members of the GPC - a statement that stood in sharp contrast with the GPC's claims of a Houthi charge against them.
