Thousands gather in Sanaa after rebel clashes

"I call on brors of neighboring countries and coalition, to stop ir attacks, to lift blockade, to open airports and to allow entry of food aid and medicines, in return we will pass page (.)" And we will deal with m in a positive way, said Saleh in a televised intervention.

Accusing Iran of helping to arm the Houthis during the conflict, the Saudi-led coalition has closed air, land and sea routes. Together these groups have been fighting against the Saudi-backed forces of ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi since 2015.

In March 2015, warplanes from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and other allies began airstrikes on rebel positions in Yemen.

MEE tried to contact Houthi sources for comment on the fighting, but they declined to speak. Some Houthi supporters reported news via social media that Houthi fighters still control most of Sana'a. There has been no official word on casualties but the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that dozens were killed and hundreds were wounded in the fighting.

However, the leader of the Houthis, Abdul Malik al-Houthi denied in a TV address on Saturday that his fighters had stormed the mosque, attributing the reason behind the clashes to some militias that want to create chaos in Sana'a.

The coalition imposed a total blockade on Yemen after a rebel missile was shot down near Riyadh.

Mr Saleh, who led Yemen for more than 30 years, was deposed in a 2011 uprising.

However, the Houthis were less open to Mr Saleh's idea. He also points up that Saleh's move represents a turning point in the situation inside the country, in which the tables have been turned against the Houthis, and the situation has returned to the status-quo prior to September 2014, when the Houthis seized chunks of the capital from former president Hadi.

For his part, Houthi leader Abdel Malek al-Houthi called on Saleh to end what he called "the sectarian strife" that he has instigated, and threatened to take action against his supporters militarily if he does not.

A statement from Saleh's party called for its loyal armed tribes and supporters to fight against Houthis.

Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said at least 80 people have been killed in this week's clashes between forces loyal to Saleh and Houthis.

A statement from Saleh's GPC appealed on Saturday to security and military forces and all public employees to be neutral and not to implement instructions given by the Houthis in all provinces.

The conflict has since claimed more than 10,000 lives and triggered what the United Nations has described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
