The Pentagon's secret UFO-hunting program

Feds reportedly spent $22M on mysterious UFO program

The Pentagon has acknowledged setting up a secret UFO program in part to help the U.S. to avoid overlooking the testimonies of respectable service officers simply because they share similarities with the kind of X-Files fiction that most people simply roll their eyes at, according to an expose from The New York Times.

Contracts consulted by the New York Times show that these millions of dollars were mainly intended for Bigelow Aerospace, the company of billionaire Robert Bigelow to assess the threat posed by these UFOs.

One reported instance involved a whitish oval object, about the size of a commercial plane, that was chased by two Navy fighter jets off the coast of San Diego in 2004.

The program yielded documents describing sightings of unidentified flying aircraft that apparently moved very fast with no visible sign of propulsion or hovered with no apparent means of lift, the Times said. Pilots attempting to understand what they see can be heard in this video published by the Department of Defense, which, however, refuses to specify the date and location of the incident.

Reid, who retired from Congress this year, told the Times he was proud of the program.

Mr. Elizondo who ran the programme until 2012 said that the effort continued and that he had a successor, whom he declined to name.

Politico suggests there may have been a more earthly motive for the programme, with one congressional staffer telling the news site that is may have been set up to monitor the technological progress of rival foreign powers, namely Russian Federation and China.

In an interview with the New York Times, Reid said he doesn't regret a thing about helping to start AATIP.

Under Bigelow's direction, the company modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena.

Instead, if aliens happen to land in America and open communications with the well-worn icebreaker "take me to your leader", they'll end up meeting someone who's barely recognizable as a human being. None of the three men wanted to discuss in public this sensitive issue and the funding of the program.

The AATIP was set up by former Democratic Senator for Nevada, Harry Reid.

Fornmer military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, who led the unit, claims he continued his research and continued to work from his office in teh Pentagon until October when he resigned in protest at what he descirbed as excessive secrecy and internal opposition. "It was determined that there were other more important priorities that deserved to be funded, in the interests of the Department of Defense", said a spokeswoman.

It added: "The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed".
