Ole Miss supposed to get NCAA ruling on infractions Friday

Former Ole Miss coach Hugh FreezeAP file

Vitter announced earlier today that Ole Miss will "vigorously appeal" the 2018 postseason ban, which the NCAA levied in addition to the university's self-imposed ban for 2017.

Today marked a big day for the Ole Miss football program, as it finally received the verdict on its NCAA infractions case. "It's clearly an excessive punishment and we are outraged at the unfair characterization of our football program and university culture involving athletics". Ole Miss has a handful of attractive seniors on its roster.

"We are deeply disappointed and angered by the additional penalty of the 2018 postseason ban", Vitter said.

Freeze, who was sacked in July for issues not related to the NCAA investigation, has received a show-cause penalty, though the length is unknown.

The program already self-imposed several penalties on itself, including a reduction of 11 scholarships over the course of four years, a $150,000 fine and a ban on postseason play in 2017. While my hope is to be a head coach again as soon as possible, this restriction does not limit, in any way, my ability to serve as an assistant coach.

The Rebels will also be on probation for three more years through November 30, 2020 and must pay a financial penalty of about $179,000.

Former Rebels assistant coaches David Saunders, Chris Vaughn, Chris Kiffin and staff member Barney Farrar were among those disciplined by the NCAA, according to ESPN. Some of them are more significant than others, ranging from former staffers allegedly fixing ACT scores to get recruits qualified for the football team to recruits allegedly hunting on boosters' private land. There will also be a vacation of wins ineligible athletes competed in. Yet, I am encouraged that the CIO found the failure to monitor was a mitigated violation based on, among other things, my personal record of compliance with NCAA rules. The committee said it reviewed 53,000 pages of information related to the case.

Freeze resigned over off-field issues - including allegations that he repeatedly made phone calls to escort services - in July. The school said the resignation was not in relation to the NCAA case. School officials removed the interim tag from head coach Matt Luke after his team's victory over their in-state rivals, but now faces an increasingly long road toward getting the Rebels back to national respectability.
