Israeli missiles hit military position near Damascus

Syrian troops man a roadblock outside the capital Damascus

UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported explosions near Damascus, which were said to have been caused by a suspected Israeli attack.

Two missiles were intercepted, according to the Syrian State TV, but the base suffered material damages, he extent of which is still not clear. The incident reportedly occurred Friday night, with IDF planes attacking the Iranian base at al-Kiswah, south of Damascus.

Israeli missiles attacked a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria's air defense system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday.

The Israeli entity is closely linked to the terrorist organizations in Syria.

The spokesperson for the Israeli military declined to comment on reports of the attack.

Israel has acknowledged carrying out repeated air and missile strikes in Syria since the beginning of the war six years ago in order to stop arms deliveries to Hizballah.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said often that Israel will not allow Iran to establish a permanent presence in Syria. "We will not allow that regime to entrench itself militarily in Syria, as it seeks to do, for the express objective of eradicating our state", said Netanyahu. A recent report in a Kuwaiti newspaper included a statement from Israeli officials who said that the government had vowed to destroy any Iranian positions within 40 km of the northern border with Syria. Satellite images showed construction at the alleged base.
