Houthi fighters kill Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh

Yemen's Saleh ready for 'new page' with Saudi-led coalition as clashes rage

Members of his political party claimed Saleh had been killed at point-blank range, after his three-vehicle convoy was stopped by Houthi militiamen.

The circumstances of Saleh's death were unclear but Houthi officials said their forces caught up with him as he tried to flee capital city Sanaa.

Video footage, seen by MEMO, has been circulated online showing the body of someone who looks like the former president with a large wound in his head, however the footage could not be verified and is too graphic to publish. On Saturday he abruptly switched sides, defecting to the Saudi-led Gulf coalition that has been bombing Houthi forces in northern Yemen.

Saleh's death was announced by the Houthis rebels who have been fighting Saleh's forces for the past week. Either Houthis will take full control of Sanaa or coalition & Hadi forces will push into city with full force in coordination with GPC.

But when Houthi forces rose up against Hadi in 2015, Saleh re-emerged as a political player, joining forces with the rebels in their fight against coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia, a former ally.

Mack told VOA, before news of Mr. Saleh's death, the former president "wanted to have one chance to restore his reputation, which has been terribly, terribly damaged during the past decade". He added that he had sent several warnings to Saleh.

His home in Sana'a was blown up during an attack, according to a Houthi-run television station.

Saleh loyalists and Houthi rebels drove President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi's internationally-recognised government out of the capital in 2014.

The United Nations called for a humanitarian pause in Sanaa between the hours of 10 am and 4pm to allow civilians to leave their homes, aid workers to reach them, and the wounded to get medical care.

McGoldrick warned the warring parties that any deliberate attacks on civilians and against civilian and medical infrastructure are "clear violations of global humanitarian law and may constitute war crimes".

This is the first such airdrop in Sanaa since the start of the fighting three days ago and the ferocious fighting in the country's capital might enter a new phase following the Saudi intervention with providing logistical support for Saleh, according to local observers.

Circumstances for the alleged death of Saleh, who was the leader of Yemen and its precursor Yemen Arab Republic for decades and cooperated with the US, were not immediately clear.

He said the Houthis have put a stop to a massive plot, which represented a serious threat to the country and to its stability and security, as well as the unity of its people, by handing it over to its enemies, after they had failed to capture it in almost three years of battle. We can't get out of our homes'.

'The fighting has been so violent we feel we could die at any moment.
