Govt requests for Facebook user data up a third in H1

Hand over the data

Facebook, which released the Government Requests Report for the first half of 2017, on Tuesday registered 21% spike from India compared with the same period past year. India, the UK, Germany and France were also among the most frequent requesters, with 12 per cent, nine per cent, seven per cent and six per cent, respectively.

The largest source of user data requests came from the USA, where the government served Facebook 32,716 requests for data from 52,280 accounts. U.S. requests have climbed steeply since Facebook's first report covering January to June 2013, when it received just 12,000 requests involving 21,000 accounts.

Facebook continues to see increases in the number of requests for private user data from governments around the globe, according to the latest Transparency Report released by the social network.

Law enforcement authorities are permitted to confidentially request personal data from Facebook to obtain account details ranging from IP addresses, photos, messages, credit card details and email addresses. The Transparency Report was previously called the Government Requests Report.

In the second half of past year, that figure stood at 64,276. Facebook restricted access in Mexico to 20,506 posts of the video in the first half of 2017 alone. The company stated that they are concerned about the internet disruptions, which can be a hurdle to the businesses and restrict people from sharing and communicating with their family and friends.

In the first half of 2017, Facebook received 224,464 copyright reports about content on Facebook, 41,854 trademark reports, and 14,279 counterfeit reports.

The informal organization initially presented the reports, which give crude figures on information solicitations and information in truth, in 2013 to help build permeability on government conduct. Around 70,000 requests were sent to Instagram, and 685,000 pieces of content were removed. On Instagram, it took action against 108,094 posts following 10,231 counterfeit claims.
