German pilots' union calls four-hour Ryanair strike tomorrow

Ryanair writes to IMPACT setting out details of union recognition

Meetings have taken place this week between Ryanair and IMPACT with the next key meeting scheduled for January 3, where the aim is to agree a recognition agreement that will establish collective bargaining procedures.

The union called off planned strike action after Ryanair last week announced that it would recognise trade unions for the first time in its 32-year history, but it said it would reverse the decision unless written confirmation was supplied.

The German pilots' association Vereinigung Cockpit said its negotiations with the company yesterday ended without results.

The pilots plan to hold a warning strike between 5 am and 9 am (0400 and 0800 GMT) on all of the Irish carrier's services from German airports.

It follows landmark talks between unions and management on Tuesday when the airline said it would also recognise cabin crew unions as well as those of pilots. The German union's hardball move contrasts with solid progress in Ryanair's home country of Ireland, showing just how bumpy the path toward a deal remains.

Earlier, IMPACT said the airline had confirmed in writing that it recognised the union as the representative of pilots at the airline.

"It'll be around security, terms of conditions of employment for our Ryanair pilots".

Commenting on the official recognition of the union by Ryanair, IMPACT official Ashley Connolly described it as a "historic achievement" that would resonate beyond the company.

Ryanair said the strike is "unjustified" given that the sides have agreed to meet again on January 5, adding that the pilot council which attended the talks had not been elected by its own staff and contained one person who is now in litigation with the company.

While IMPACT acknowledged that "the danger of industrial action had receded for the present", the union cautioned that it expected management to reach agreement on procedures quickly so that the parties could move on to negotiate substantial issues around pilots' pay and working conditions.

"We will be engaging with Ryanair company council, which is made up of our Ryanair pilots, and we will be developing our agenda", she told RTÉ's News at One.

The airline is also meeting German pilots this week before other appointments around Europe, including Italy, in early 2018.

IMPACT has given Ryanair until midday today to come up with a document and said strike action can be implemented in the absence of a timely agreement.
