Airliner Witnessed North Korean Missile Test

An airline spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday that the crew on CX893 had made a report about the suspected sighting on November 29. SCMP

Cathay Pacific Airways and Korean Air Lines, whose flight crews said they spotted North Korea's missile shooting through the sky last week, do not plan on altering their route plans. The flight was cruising over Japan when the North Korean missile was launched.

"Be advised, we witnessed the DPRK missile blow up and fall apart near our current location", the pilots said, South China Morning Post reports.

The move came after the July 27 missile launch by North Korea into the Sea of Japan, Singapore Airlines said on Tuesday (Dec 5) in response to queries from Channel NewsAsia.

The crew on at least three commercial flights on Korean Air and Cathay Pacific have reported sighting the missile in the air.

Various other commercial airlines have become cautious due to the North Korea's missile testing as it doesn't comply with the worldwide agreements of giving a prior notice before conducting a test.

"At the moment, no one is changing any routes or operating parameters", the airline said in a statement to The Associated Press.

"We remain alert and review the situation as it evolves", the airline spokesman said. Two South Korean planes also reported witnessing the missile test.

A plane takes off near the control tower at San Francisco International Airport on February 25, 2013 in San Francisco, Calif.

An airplane crew flying over Japan saw North Korea's missile as it plunged back through the atmosphere last week, their airline said, as South Korea and the USA kicked off their largest ever joint air exercise.

In October, the ICAO condemned Pyongyang for its continued launching of ballistic missiles and urged the country to comply with worldwide aviation standards.

It also claimed the Hwasong-15 missile fired Wednesday can be tipped with a "super-large heavy warhead" capable of striking the whole U.S. mainland. Were the weapon to be fired on a minimum energy trajectory or standard launch trajectory, there is a possibility the re-entry vehicle would survive.

North Korean state media condemned the exercise, saying the US was "begging for nuclear war" and will push the region "to the brink of nuclear war", the BBC reported.

While few believe the regime's program is complete, the threat posed by the new missile is significant, warned United States Defense Secretary Gen. Jim Mattis.

"It went higher, frankly, than any previous shot they've taken".

United States carriers have always been banned from flying over most of North Korea because of the risk of planes being targeted by the North's military.

According to Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), that is a comment that needs to be taken seriously.

The repeated missile tests have seriously threatened the safety of worldwide civil aviation, the ICAO had said.

If you found this article informative, please consider sharing it. "The president is not going to allow North Korea to have a nuclear weapon in their hands that can hit America", Graham told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on November 29.
