Uber breach affected 2.7 million Britons

Washington is the latest state to take Uber to court over its hidden data breach

Not only that, the company reportedly tried to sweep the matter under the rug.

Just days after Uber admitted of a massive cyberattack and breach of personal data of 50m users and 7m drivers globally, the ride sharing firm has said today that in that breach personal data of approximately 2.7m people in the United Kingdom has been exposed.

Separately, prosecutors in the U.S. have heard that Uber may have hired ex-CIA intelligence operatives to conduct surveillance on its rivals.

John Thune (R-SD), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), notes that an outside law firm commissioned by Uber's board of directors uncovered the 2015 data breach.

Washington Attorney-General Bob Ferguson said that because the drivers' information that was accessed included names and license numbers, state law required Uber to notify them and his office within 45 days. "There is no excuse for keeping this information from consumers".

The story was first broken by Bloomberg, which reported that Uber not only sought to cover up the incident but also paid hackers $100,000 (£75,000) to delete the data they had stolen.

Ferguson's lawsuit is the first from a state, although attorneys general in New York, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut and IL have begun investigations, and the city of Chicago and Cook County have filed a lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in King County Superior Court. Specifically, he is seeking civil penalties of up to $2,000 per violation-the maximum amount allowed under Washington's revised data breach law.

In a letter to Ferguson's office last week, an Uber attorney wrote that the company "now thinks it was wrong not to provide notice to affected users at the time". If that penalty were applied to each of the affected drivers in Washington, it would total almost $22 million in penalties.

"While Uber has repeatedly asserted that there has been no evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident, the concealment of a data breach bears serious consequences under the Data Privacy Act of 2012", according to Privacy Commissioner Raymund Liboro.
