Specialist British Forces Team Join Search For Missing Argentine Sub

Time running out for Argentine sub crew? Canada monitoring situation, search intensifies

The U.S., U.K, Chile and Brazil have sent their vessels and aircraft to help search for the missing submarine.

The global search effort for the missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan will benefit from calm weather this week, and just in time: the sub's supply of breathable air is likely running low, according to the Argentine Navy. A man walks past a banner in the colours of the Argentine national flag, outside the Argentine Naval Base where the ARA San Juan submarine that is missing at sea sailed from, in Mar del Plata, Argentina November 20, 2017. The official stressed that search efforts thus far have yet to locate the submarine.

Gabriel Galeazzi, a naval commander, told reporters that the submarine had come up from the depths and reported the unspecified electrical malfunction before it disappeared almost 300 miles off the coast.

The disappointment followed another letdown earlier in the day, when the navy said satellite calls detected over the weekend did not in fact come from the vessel.

The US is also providing rapid response capabilities, including aircraft and personnel to assist Argentina in its search for the missing submarine. The craft was navigating normally, underwater, at a speed of five knots toward Mar del Plata when it was last heard from, he said.

But if the sub doesn't surface, oxygen might last only seven days, Balbi said.

"A warship has a lot of backup systems, to allow it to move from one to another when there is a breakdown", Galeazzi said.

The ARA San Juan was returning from a routine mission to Ushuaia, near the southern-most tip of South America, towards Mar del Plata.

The ARA San Juan submarine got its inauguration in 1983 and during that time became the newest underwater vessel in the Navy's fleet. "We continue to do everything, deploying all available national and global media, to find them as soon as possible". Grief counselors, five psychologists and a psychiatrist, are lending their support to the families of the crew members.

He says the sounds did not come from tools being banged against the hull of a submarine as was previously reported by some media.

The ARA San Juan has been out of radio contact since November 15, when she called shoreside commanders to report minor difficulties with her batteries.

If the sub is bobbing adrift on the surface and the hatch is open, it will have an available air supply and enough food for about 30 days, he said. That included the replacement of its four diesel engines and its electric propeller engines, according to specialist publication Jane's Sentinel.
