Nigeria police say at least 20 killed in mosque bombing

BREAKING: At least 50 killed in suicide bombing at mosque

At least 50 people have been killed in a suicide bombing in the eastern Nigerian state of Adamawa, police say.

Abubakar said that a young boy was responsible for the blast which occurred during the early morning prayer.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Mubi North Local Government Area in the state, Musa Ahmad Bello, said: "The suicide bomber struck at the mosque during the morning prayer".

Abubakar added that numerous injured were receiving treatment nearby.

Boko Haram typically mounts suicide attacks in crowded public places such as mosques and markets.

"So far 15 people are killed and about 20 sustained different degrees of injuries in the Mubi Mosque bomb blast", Garga said.

"All parties to the ongoing conflict in northeast Nigeria, including Boko Haram, are bound by the rules of worldwide humanitarian law, which explicitly prohibits any direct attacks against civilians and civilian objects".

Noting the current moves by the IGP to review police personnel and strategy in the state, the president directed him to visit the state and report back his findings about the deadly attacks.

Boko Haram has waged an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria since 2009 in its attempt to create an Islamic state in the region.

The group split in 2016 and the faction under Shekau is based in the Sambisa forest on the border with Cameroon and Chad and mainly targets civilians with suicide bombers.

Security analysts said it again underlined the threat posed by the Islamic State group affiliate, despite an overall decline in deaths from attacks by the group a year ago. The group held land around the size of Belgium in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states until early 2015 but was forced out by Nigeria's army and troops from neighbouring countries.
