Hafiz Saeed freed, hits out at Nawaz Sharif as a 'traitor'

After release Hafiz Saeed rails against India Pakistan ex-PM Nawaz Sharif

"Saeed's release, after Pakistan's failure to prosecute or charge him, sends a deeply troubling message about Pakistan's commitment to combatting global terrorism and belies Pakistani claims that it will not provide sanctuary for terrorists on its soil", said press secretary Sara Huckabee Sanders. "The US did so on the request of India", Saeed told his supporters outside his residence.

Saeed ran the Jamaat-Ud-Dawa organization (Party of the Faith), which is thought to be a front for the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba militant group. But by bluntly calling out Pakistan and its terrorist ward, the Trump White House has cornered Islamabad. India believes that Lashkar-e-Tayyaba was behind the deadly attack in Mumbai. Saeed has repeatedly denied involvement but had previously been detained twice briefly following the attacks. The release of Saeed is a step in the wrong direction.

After his release, meanwhile, the United States on Friday asked the Pakistan government to make sure that Hafiz Saeed was arrested again and charged for his crimes. This was following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks which claimed 166 lives, including six American nationals.

JuD is considered by the U.S. and India to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the militant group blamed for the attack on India's financial capital.

"We have been paying Pakistan billions and billions of dollars at the same time they are housing the very terrorists that we are fighting", Trump had said at that time as he unveiled his new Afghan strategy, adding: "No partnership can survive a country's harbouring of militants and terrorists who target USA service members and officials".

India's Ministry of External Affairs condemned Saeed's release, saying it showed Pakistan was not serious about prosecuting terrorists.

Like much of Pakistan's establishment, Saeed was virulently anti-India, and campaigned against New Delhi's occupation of the disputed territory of Kashmir for years.

"This is a positive moment for our country's relationship with Pakistan", President Donald Trump said in a statement after Coleman was freed. A Lahore court this week ordered his release, rejecting the Pakistani government's arguments that he was a threat to public safety.

Last month, however, the Trump administration appeared to revise its hard line against Islamabad. "India has always leveled allegations of terrorism...but (Lahore) High Court decision has proved that all of India's propaganda are false", Saeed said.

In August, he warned that Pakistan had "much to lose" if it failed to cooperate with the U.S.in neighboring Afghanistan. "They play everyone, whether it's China or the terrorists or us". That came about after Pakistani military's purported rescue of American hostage Caitlan Coleman and her family after five years of Taliban captivity.
