FCC confirms plan to kill net neutrality

Rep. Scott Peters on Tuesday blasted plans by President Trump's chairman of the Federal Communications Commission to seek full repeal of net neutrality rules.

Pai is taking the opportunity to repeat his assertions that the net neutrality regulations - established after years of litigation over broadband providers throttling internet speeds and more - are bad for innovation.

Pai distributed his alternative plan to other FCC commissioners Tuesday in preparation for a December 14 vote.

"Net neutrality" regulations, created to prevent internet service providers like Verizon, AT&T, Comcast and Charter from favouring some sites and apps over others, are on the chopping block.

Broadband companies praised Pai's proposal on net neutrality.

"Businesses large and small will have a clearer path to invest more in our nation's broadband infrastructure under Chairman Pai's leadership", the post continued. According to reports, the chairman will seek to overturn almost all of the Net Neutrality safeguards put in place during the Obama administration.

Unlike some matter of the FCC that principally concern technicians and policy wonks, net neutrality is a subject of fierce public debate.

Net neutrality is the principle that internet providers treat all web traffic equally, and it's pretty much how the internet has worked since its creation.

With three Republican and two Democratic commissioners, the move to end net neutrality is all but certain to be approved.

New rules would restore a "light-touch regulatory approach", said Pai, a Republican appointed by President Trump.

Matt Wood of the consumer group Free Press said the new initiative was a "massive giveaway to the handful of media conglomerates" which control broadband.

Several internet companies are strongly opposed to the move.

Senator Brian Schatz also shared his thoughts on the plan saying, "If adopted, the FCC's plan will change the way every American gets information, watches movies, listens to music, conducts business and talks to their families".

"The removal of antiquated, restrictive regulations will pave the way for broadband network investment, expansion and upgrades", Jonathan Spalter, chief executive officer of the trade group USTelecom with member including AT&T and Verizon Communications Inc., said in an emailed statement. With them in place, a provider such as Comcast can't charge Netflix for a faster path to its customers, or block it or slow it down.

"The open internet uplifts the voices of people of color and racial-justice advocates, activists and dissenters of all stripes, independent content creators and journalists, and entrepreneurs".

Consumers Union called the proposal "an enormous loss for consumers" that "would give internet service providers more power and control over the websites we can visit".
