Drinking Coffee Actually Has Health Benefits, Study Finds

Drink up Three cups of coffee a day 'may have health benefits'

Coffee lovers rejoice! Drinking three to four cups of coffee a day is more likely to benefit than harm a person. Scientists at the University of Southampton found a lower risk of liver disease and some cancers in coffee drinkers, as well as a lower risk of dying from stroke.

So says a review by British scientists of more than 200 studies on coffee consumption and health, published Wednesday in The BMJ, a British medical journal.

Also, as the BBC points out, caffeine - which often has a hand in the benefits associated with coffee - can be found in a lot of different foodstuffs and beverages; as such, if you're trying to limit yourself to no more than 400mg of caffeine a day (which is the upper limit recommended by the FDA), you'll need to keep track of more than just the coffee you drink.

Although the review found that there was more benefit than harm from drinking coffee, the studies were not adjusted for important confounders, such as body mass index, smoking, age, alcohol use, income and education level.

The only exception was women who are at higher risk for broken bones.

The study conducted by researchers led by Robin Poole, a specialist registrar in public health at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, noticed greatest risk reduction for liver cirrhosis.

The included studies used mainly observational data, providing lower quality evidence, so no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect, but their findings back up other recent reviews and studies of coffee intake.

Higher intake of coffee may prevent liver damage!

What's more, they are calling for thorough clinical trials on coffee admission to discover more about the potential advantages to wellbeing. Increasing consumption to above three cups a day was not associated with harm, but the beneficial effect was less pronounced.

Coffee drinkers also appeared to have lower risks for heart disease. "We simply do not know", Guallar wrote, continuing, "Coffee drinking is a complex behavior determined by cultural norms and associated with multiple socioeconomic, lifestyle, dietary, and health behaviors".

Coffee drinking during pregnancy is linked with low birth weight.

Finally, Guallar cautions that drinking coffee is sometimes linked with less healthful habits, such as eating sugary cakes or other fatty products.

All in all, however, the benefits seem to outweigh the risks.

But he added: "Moderate coffee consumption seems remarkably safe, and it can be incorporated as part of a healthy diet by most of the adult population".
